The oldest and thickest sea ice in the Arctic zone north of Greenland is splitting in a never-before-seen event. The waters found there are so cold, they have been frozen for as long as records exist — even during summer months. For the second time this year, the frozen waters cracked open to reveal the sea beneath them in an event that scientists are calling “scary.”

Bad news for anyone who likes to eat cereal, or granola bars, or anything that contains oats at all: a recent study by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) tested 45 conventional oat products for the presence of glyphosate, and researchers found it in 43 of them.

Take that, plastic! France has announced that it plans to make bottles made with recycled plastic less expensive than those made from new plastic, part of a larger plan to intensify regulations on plastic use. Other aspects of the plan include increasing taxes on landfill and lowering the value-added tax on recycling activities.

Over the next six months, Thailand will ban the import of 432 types of scrap electronics, or e-waste. E-waste includes any device with an electric cord or battery, and recyclers often mine these trash deposits for valuable metals. But the devices can also contain hazardous and polluting chemicals, such as lead, mercury and cadmium. Thailand has been struggling to deal with overflowing waste deposits following China’s imported trash ban last year.

We know about plastic pollution in the Pacific Ocean, and even in the Arctic Ocean. But scientists thought the Antarctic was relatively free of that particular type of pollution until a recent study from the University of Hull, Científica del Sur University, and the British Antarctic Survey. Researchers discovered the levels of microplastics in the area are much greater than expected.

Scientists are rushing to explore an underwater area previously covered by an Antarctic ice shelf for 120,000 years. When a trillion-ton iceberg the size of Delaware broke away from Antarctica’s Larsen C Ice Shelf, it created an opportunity for scientists to gain a greater understanding of the aquatic polar ecosystem that dwells beneath the ice.

Grizzly bears in Yellowstone National Park are in danger as Wyoming opens up its first bear hunt since the Endangered Species Act was passed in 1973. Wildlife conservationists working alongside famed animal rights champion and educator Jane Goodall have raised over $28,000 online for their campaign “Shoot’em with a Camera, Not a Gun,” which has infiltrated the list of approximately 7,000 lottery members applying for a hunting licence in the state of Wyoming.
